I am familiar with Twitter since I have been active on the social media site for several years now. This has been my first time using Twitter for educational purposes or anything other social purposes. I have learned how easy it is to share and communicate through Twitter. Not just with my classmate but it is an efficient way to connected nationally. I have followed education-related twitter pages from different states all with different resources for students! Thankfully, since Twitter is easy to navigate I have not experienced any issues.

Creating a Web Design has been interesting as this was my first experience. I learned how to link a properly working calendar onto the website as well as mixing theme features to create my own design. Weebly is a great professional tool, however, I believe additional features can help create a better vision. Themes are very limited and at least for me, I had trouble changing fonts for certain text boxes that came with the theme. This may be one of my favorite assignments in college as I have learned to implement it in my future career. My path in life is to become a Social Worker and I could create a website to explain and share what the field is like. Assistive technology is used in classrooms to improve the capabilities of students with disabilities. Adaptive technology is specifically designed for a person with disabilities. For example, the most common assistive technology as hearing aids. In fourth grade, I met a classmate who was hard-of-hearing. She explained how the hearing aid made lessons and conversations clear for her to understand. A challenge may be younger students having difficulties understanding how assistive technology helps their classmates.

I created my first Twitter page in middle school and the only reason being to follow Justin Bieber. It was not until after high school when I began using the app. Once I started college, following friends, artists, universities, companies, etc. became an easier way to stay up-to-date with everyone around me. I believe Twitter can be helpful for many different career paths. For example, teachers can create Twitter accounts in order to have students follow assignment, just like we do in our class. My career goal is becoming a Social Worker and in that field, Twitter can be used for various reasons. Spreading awareness by posting seminars or training through Twitter is an efficient way to get the word out.
Digital divide affects student due to lack of equity. Not all students have the required resources to complete assignments which require technology our of their reach. This can also create a class and privilege divide within classmates. Students may not present their best work if they are not able to reach a computer, therefore, giving them less time to work on the assignment. Another student may have better results for having the privilege of access to resources.
I would definitely implement Khan Academy in my classroom. Khan Academy provides tutoring for multiple subjects and grade levels. It is easily accessible and most important of all it's free of charge. Aside from Khan Academy, I would implement Kahoot as well. Kahoot has been used in most of my college classes and can be used for all grade levels. This can be a fun way of creating a Pop Quiz for students or way of reviewing for an upcoming exam with the class. There is various academic software that can be implemented in classrooms and I believe Khan Academy is one of the most important and Kahoot to be efficient.

I chose the ELA Standard for 4th grade as I am familiar with the majority of the technology tools. Fourth grade usually focuses on writing and does not include any complicated mathematical websites I was unable to work myself in elementary school. I have previously worked with TeacherTube as a source where teachers can share educational content with students. I found it very interesting to see that included in the technology tools as it is not a very common website. I am also familiar with the presentation software known as Prezi. Prezi allows students to be creative when working on presentations rather than sticking to the regular standard PowerPoints.

The 4th-grade CPALM Educator Toolkit I would use in a classroom is the English Language Arts. Within the English toolkit, I found a tutorial which allows students to differentiate when to use formal and informal language. I believe this is a very important tool as I have come across essays that including very informal language. Within the Language Arts Toolkit the tutorial "Super Writing!" teaches students how to properly use commas and quotation marks. Just as the first tutorial this one is just as important if not more. A combination of both tutorials can help make a difference in a students essay.

The Newsletter Design assignment was a very creative way of getting to know the functions in MS Word. I learned how to work with borders and how to apply graphics but most of all, I learned how to put together an aesthetically pleasing newsletter/flyer. I believe I could have had longer articles as well as a shorter permission slip. I would have also have liked to come up with something more creative and more colorful. Though I do not plan on focusing my career on education, I do want to go into Social Work. Creating organized newsletters now can help me with a newsletter I may have to do in the future. For now, check out the one I created for class!

Throughout high school and college, there has been plenty of instances in which I have used MS Word as a student. My freshman year of high school I took an Intro to Technology class, which allowed me to daily practice on MS programs like Word. Until the end of my high school career, MS Word was used for submitting essays, creating flyers, tables, letters, etc. Now that I am finishing college, I can say I have spent the majority of the past four years working with MS Word. I have also noticed my professors using MS Word when sending out the syllabus, instructions for assignments, and created samples for students to follow on assignments.

In elementary school, copyright materials were presented to my fourth-grade class in order to understand how to properly cite when using material from a separate source. As an educator,  I would continue to require students to use citations when implementing separate sources. Using models of citation pages as well as providing websites like Purdue OWL would help students more easily understand the concept. Having a specific copyright section in the instructions of an assigned paper can also help students understand the importance of this step. 

For students to understand Academic Honesty, I would explain the importance of absorbing the material and creating something authentic rather than not. Cyberbullying in my classroom would have a zero tolerance policy. I believe cyber bullying is an underrepresented topic in society as it affects students across the country. Teaching students that hiding behind a digital screen through derogatory words can affect someone else would be a high priority. As for the digital divide, this can easily affect students that come from lower SES backgrounds. Not everyone in the classroom may access the same resources. For example, assigning homework that requires little-to-no computer use can be beneficial to those who do not own a computer. Another solution can be taking students to the schools' library in order to complete their assignments.

Initial Blog Post

My name is Nina Salyrosas and I am a senior at Florida State. I was born in Peru but raised in Miami Beach, FL. Even though Miami is an eight-hour drive away I chose Florida State for their Social Sciences program. I am currently majoring in Sociology graduating Fall 2019 and will be applying to the College of Social Work also at Florida State for Grad school. My goal has always been to do everything possible to obtain my degree and begin the career I have always wanted. Along with a major in Sociology, I am also minoring in Education which brings me to the introduction of this blog.

Growing up I have not had the privilege of applying modern technology into my educational setting. However, since Elementary school, SMART Boards, as well as desktop computers, have been always been around for reading programs, library quizzes, and exams like the FCAT or EOC. My freshman year of high school I took an Introduction to Technology class where we learned how to properly work with Microsoft programs such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Since the beginning of college, I have been reliant on my laptop and computers at the library. My major requires reading and writing, therefore, everything I need is usually online.

Due to not growing up with electronics in the classroom like modern times, I would like to expand my knowledge in ways in which I would be able to implement necessary tools for students. I would also like to learn where to draw the line with overusing technology so that students do not become completely reliant when it is not available. Lastly, I would also be interested in knowing whether students perform better with or without those resources available to them.
